In October 2006, Sallie B. Howard School took 10 middle school students and 7 chaperones to China. Students spent nearly three weeks visiting many of China’s historic sites such as the famed Great Wall of China, the Summer Palace of Emperor Xi, the Forbidden City, Tienanmen Square, the Terra Cota Clay Warriors Museum, and the Jin Mao Tower---the tallest building in China and one of the tallest skyscrapers in the world! Students were treated to exciting train rides across China, dinner at fine, authentic Chinese restaurants, a classic presentation by Chinese Acrobats, and glorious shopping with unbelievably low prices! Time was spent at one of China’s finest universities where Sallie B. Howard students interacted and dialogued with Chinese students at “English Corner”—a weekly Friday night gathering of Chinese students who help each other learn English. Students also spent nearly a week living on campus at a Chinese high school. Our students attended classes and even participated in a musical program with their Chinese counterparts. Our students’ horizons were truly broadened on this trip and they came away from this experience more aware of what it takes to “heal the world…and make it a better place.”
