Visual Arts
Mr. Peter Varisano
All instruction for art education is based on the North Carolina Standard Course of Study. The Visual Arts Program is based on both the traditional training of visual artists and 20th and 21st century concepts. Students in K-3 are not doing typical school art projects. They are exploring the elements of line: length, direction, angle, weight, and quality. They continuously draw and they paint very little. Since "drawing is the probity of art," this love of drawing must be developed. At fourth grade students become art majors. It is here that they begin to explore the many media and techniques with 2 and 3 dimensional art work. Middle School Art Majors get a great experience with studio time twice per day and they are taught advanced illustration, drawing, and painting methods. Their work is exhibited often and all lessons are reinforced with examples from art history. Past and current visual artists are examined and discussed. Critiques of student work take place so that all can learn by taking part in examination of the work.
