The Sallie B. Howard School music classes offer instruction in accordance with the North Carolina Standard Course of Study for Music
as well as the National Standards for music.

The focus in grades K – 3 is on reading and notating music in preparation for future participation in band and chorus classes.
Students have the opportunity to learn all aspects of music by using a variety of instruments including keyboards, recorders, as well as a variety
of multi-cultural rhythm instruments.

Advanced Band is offered to those students with at least 2 years of Band experience (one year if recommended by teacher) who have demonstrated
the ability to perform music at least at the grade two level. Admission is by audition only. Students in this band have many performance opportunities
in addition to our regular Winter and Spring Concerts.  This group annually participates in the North Carolina Bandmasters Association Eastern District Band Festival and has consistently received superior & excellent ratings. Upon successfully completing this course,
students will be more than prepared for participation in high school bands.
